MedtecLIVE Young Talents Award

Young Talents Award 2021
For the first time at the upcoming virtual MedtecLIVE 2021, attractive prizes will be awarded to the best young talents. The competition is open to all Bachelor‘s and Master‘s graduates who have completed their work within the past 1.5 years. The content and results of the thesis should relate to an innovation, improvement or new application in medical technology, including its entire value chain.

The final papers will be evaluated and reviewed by a top-class jury consisting of representatives from industry and research. The five best candidates will have the opportunity to present their work live to the jury and the interested trade audience.

The presentation of the best works and the MedtecLIVE Young Talents Award ceremony will take place at virtual MedtecLIVE & SUMMIT 2021.
The package for the winners of the MedtecLIVE Young Talents Award includes
  • Publication of a professional article about the work
  • Discussion with a high-ranking representative of an exhibitor of MedtecLIVE
  • iPad (32 GB) incl. Apple Pencil


The theses can be submitted in the form of an abstract in German or English by March 10, 2021, using the form below.
  • Content of the abstract: Title of the thesis, name of the author, company/institute and short description of the topic.
  • Format: no longer than two DIN A4 pages, standard office format or PDF.
In addition, a letter of recommendation from a university, college, research institute or company is required to participate in the awarding process.

The five best candidates will be notified by March 31, 2021 at the latest. The live presentation of the five best final theses and the announcement of the winners will take place on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 during virtual MedtecLIVE & SUMMIT.

Rainer Birkenbach, born 1968, has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Brainlab since 1998. He is responsible for all R&D efforts, including Usability & Design, and also oversees Quality Management, Product Marketing for Neurosurgery, Learning Infrastructure and IP. He holds a Master of Science degree from the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Saarbrücken, where he studied Electrical Engineering from 1989 to 1994.

Before entering university, Rainer worked for Deutsche Telekom. He began his career at Brainlab as a software engineer in 1994. By 1996, he had advanced to the position of Director of Research & Development, which he held from 1996 through 1997.

Medical Director of the Clinic for General, Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery, LMU Klinikum, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich.

  • During and after his medical studies at the Free University of Berlin, he spent several years abroad in the USA: residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston and internship at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.
  • Clinical specialties include geriatric traumatology and osteoporosis-associated fractures.
  • Past congress president of "European Orthopaedic Research Society 2015" and "Osteology 2014".
  • Congress president of "Aging Traumatology 2022".
  • Other main interests in medical technology.
  • Chair of the Bavarian Medical Technology Expert Panel of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.
  • Member of the TÜV-Süd Medical Advisory Board. Founder of the companies "Industrie-in-Klinik-Plattform M3i" and Janus MedTech.
  • Spokesman of the Trauma Network Upper Bavaria/Munich South of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU).
  • Member of the guideline commission "Osteoporosis" of the umbrella organization of osteological societies (DVO).
  • 2013 Head of the AG Osteologie of the DGU.
  • Consortium leader of the innovation fund project "FLS-CARE".

Dr. Filipa Campos-Viola

Dr. Filipa Campos-Viola

Dr. Filipa Campos-Viola is working as Medical Device Expert at FSQ Experts GmbH. There she leads a team that offers medical device companies concrete and pragmatic solutions to close know-how or resource bottlenecks in areas such as quality management, regulatory affairs or system engineering.

After her Master's degree in "Biomedical Engineering" at the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Portugal, she worked as a neuroscientist in the UK and Germany, where she completed her PhD.
Her interests lie in an integrated and agile approach to Safety and Human Factors for the realization of safety-critical products and in empowering development teams towards sustainable compliance.

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, Erlangen - Head of Image Processing and Medical Engineering Department

Christian Münzenmayer received the M.Sc. degree in computational engineering from the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Koblenz-Landau and an MBA in General Management from FOM University of Applied Sciences. Since 2000, he is with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, Erlangen where he started as a research associate. Since 2008 he headed the Medical Image Processing group and coordinated all activities in the business field Digital Pathology and Computational Microscopy.
In his current position as head of department Image Processing and Medical Engineering he is also responsible for the business field Digital Health Systems at Fraunhofer IIS and part of the management team of the Smart Sensing and Electronics division.
