The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP works on innovative solutions in the fields of vacuum coating, surface treatment and organic semiconductors. This work is based on the core competencies in electron beam technology and plasma activated high rate deposition as well as technologies for organic electronics and IC/system design.

Fraunhofer FEP thus offers a broad spectrum of research, development and pilot production possibilities, in particular for the treatment, sterilization, structuring and refinement of surfaces as well as for OLED microdisplays, sensors, optical filters and flexible OLED lighting.

We increasingly use our know-how for innovative solutions in medical technology. Using our core technologies, we can apply biofunctional coatings to surfaces or to customize surface properties, e.g. to increase the biocompatibility of implants. For the treatment of medical products, we use low-energy electrons as an effective tool for germ reduction and sterilization of packaging, implants and medical devices. The Institute's biomedical laboratory unit offers direct testing of treated surfaces for biocompatibility and degree of sterilization.

The results of research and development in organic electronics are also increasingly finding their way into medical fields. Interactive data glasses and wearables equipped with OLED microdisplays and sensors offer solutions for patient monitoring and as therapy and support systems for medical and nursing staff. Our wavelength-specific OLED light sources also offer possibilities in light therapy or wound healing. The results in the development of biodegradable electronics point the way for the potential use in biodegradable active implants.

The aim of the Fraunhofer FEP is to exploit the innovation potential of electron beam, plasma and organic electronics for novel production processes, such as the sterilization of medical devices or packaging, and for innovative devices, and to make it usable for our customers.
