Heads of the industry: A portrait of Tobias Krick

Health scientist, healthcare influencer, founder, consultant, speaker. Dr Tobias Krick has made a name for himself with his tireless commitment to digitalization and greater networking in the healthcare sector.

With an impressive career ranging from academic research to founding start-ups, he is modernizing the German healthcare system.

It all began at the University of Bremen, where Krick studied health sciences and later completed his doctorate. His research focused on digitalization in care: a topic that fascinated him from the very beginning and which he pursued with great passion. “Back then, I looked at the structures and processes in the healthcare sector and I didn't like most of them. So I wanted to help make things better,” says Krick. So during his doctorate, he worked in the renowned “Future of Care” cluster, where he spent seven years working side by side with medical universities and large care institutions on projects dealing with the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation in the care sector. These experiences deepened his desire: the healthcare system must become better. “As a healthcare scientist, I see myself as a doctor for the healthcare system,” says the healthcare rebel.

From scientist to entrepreneur

The founding of the Healthcare iNNK innovation network was central to Krick's career. “I've always been enthusiastic about start-ups. It was clear that I would one day found one myself,” says Krick. This network now brings together 29 start-ups in the healthcare sector. These organizations work together on the digitalization of clinics and long-term care in order to develop solutions for current challenges. “I was thinking, the people who found start-ups are also the ones who can influence systems and drive digitalization.” Healthcare iNNK promotes the exchange of knowledge and resources through close collaboration and networking. The goal is clear: to improve the healthcare system. Krick plays a central role as a facilitator and supporter, bringing the right people together and helping them to put their ideas into practice.

Speak up

An important part of Krick's work is his active communication and public relations work. With the launch of the podcast “Healthcare out of the Box”, he has created a platform that deals with topics relating to innovations in the healthcare sector. The podcast reaches up to 2,500 listeners a month and has become a popular source of information for experts and interested parties. In addition to the podcast, Krick also uses social media, particularly LinkedIn, in his role as a healthcare influencer and “rebel” to make his ideas and insights accessible to as many people as possible. His posts on these platforms stimulate discussion and promote exchange about current developments and challenges in the healthcare sector. In addition, Krick is a popular moderator and speaker at numerous conferences and events, where he shares his expertise as a keynote speaker. He has the ability to convey complex topics in an understandable way, which makes him a valued speaker. “I do things differently to others. I'm not quite normal - in the most positive sense,” says Krick.

Rethinking healthcare

And because that wasn't enough for Krick, he wanted to create even more space for networking and respectful discussion about the industry's most pressing issues. So in 2023, together with strategist Björn Zeien, he founded the “Unboxing Healthcare” project. It includes a quarterly magazine with over 4,500 readers that focuses on current trends and best practices in the healthcare sector. In addition, “Unboxing Healthcare” regularly organizes events where experts and interested parties come together to discuss the future of healthcare and develop new ideas. Unboxing Healthcare exemplifies Krick's mission to improve the healthcare system through education and networking. “We want to show what we can achieve together. Ideas change the world”.

Respect is the foundation

The healthcare influencer is an advocate of the “respectful revolution” in healthcare, one of his core values, which also comes up again and again at the “Unboxing Healthcare” events. “Addressing problems and grievances has to be done in a respectful and constructive way that doesn't insult or put anyone in a corner,” emphasizes Krick. “We want to encourage and support each other.” His tireless determination to improve makes him question existing structures. In doing so, he often criticizes the so-called status quo maintainers who block changes in the healthcare system.

Another of his core values is the importance of personal health and mindfulness in the professional environment. He is convinced that only those who take care of their own health and do not overburden themselves are able to drive positive change and care for others in the long term. “What good is my commitment and motivation if I make myself ill?”

His principles are reflected in all his projects and his daily work, making him an authentic and credible influencer in the healthcare sector.

The goal is to make things better

Every day, Krick juggles a variety of tasks and challenges as an entrepreneur and influencer in the healthcare sector. His daily routine is characterized by working at his two companies, the innovation network Healthcare iNNK and the media company Unboxing Healthcare as well as his activities as a speaker and communicator. Using his limited time efficiently and setting clear priorities is important to him.

His personal message is clear: “Everyone has the opportunity to play an active role in shaping the future. I want to be a role model here.” Instead of being passively surprised by developments, he encourages people to take responsibility and proactively drive change in the healthcare sector. With this attitude, he approaches his tasks every day and remains an inspiring role model for many in the healthcare sector.
