The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology with about 1.300 employees is Austria's largest research and technology organisation. Among the European research institutes, AIT is a specialist in the key infrastructure issues of the future.

Neustadt offers research services for the health care sector as well as the health care industry in order to create biomedical technologies and innovations for the industry.

Main topics at MedtecLIVE are:

  • Advanced Biomaterials Technologies

The development and application of new materials and process technologies enables the improvement of material properties with novel functionalities as well as the design and production of innovative implants. These developments cover both permanent and biodegradable metal- and polymer-based implants. In this context, close collaboration with leading national and international research institutions, universities and companies top off the profile of the research team.

Our developments cover permanent and biodegradable metal- and polymer-based implants as well as laser-generated, ultrapure nanotechnology for antibacterial and anti-thrombogenic surfaces. Permanent implants require new materials with excellent biocompatibility and tailored properties in terms of strength, hardness, workability, longer service life and high patient comfort. Novel biodegradable metallic materials for implants must combine highest biocompatibility, good mechanical properties and controllable degradation rates in the body. The combination of optimized implant materials with multifunctional coatings enables the realization of novel implant strategies.

The aim is the development of complex biomaterials with temporally controllable and locally acting antibacterial and antithrombogenic properties for both permanent and temporary implants.

  • Cardiovascular Diagnostics

A multidisciplinary team is working with international partners to explore and identify new risk parameters. These research efforts lead to innovations in all fields of cardiovascular medicine and generate new diagnostic procedures and therapy concepts as well as certified hardware solutions for clinical research and extramural medical care.

Our expertise in developing such innovative technologies is based on many years of experience in hardware development and in biomathematical modelling, which has come to be recognised as an important key technology in applied cardiovascular research.

A validated result of our developments, the AIT Pulse Wave Algorithm ARCSolverÒ, is currently also on the international space station to analyze in detail the cardiovascular changes in weightlessness.

  • Medical Sensing Solutions

A multidisciplinary team develops intelligent and reusable solutions for the improvement of medical adherence, which enables reliable, simple and fast data acquisition from different sources.  Our solutions can be used for measuring the fill level of drugs in pens or (auto)injections  to record removed drugs from a blister or biochemical values (e.g. blood sugar, histamine…) and determining skin hydration, temperature and UV intensity.
